David Frederick, son of Frederick
Parr and Jane Whiting, was born 9 December 1866 at _______________ Ontario. He was known as Black Dave (skin colour). This to distinguish him from Red Dave (hair colour). He was a butcher by trade. In the 1901 census, David was living with his mother and sister Vinie at Moore Township. David lived with his brother Sherman's family in Brigden. One recollection of Sherman's daughter Gloria, was his sense of humour. "I can remember him sitting at the table in our dining room. There was a (wooden) wainscotting running around the dining room. Uncle Dave would reach over, pretend to catch an ant or two and pretend to eat them. I was horrified as a small child (about 5 or 6)." Another story from niece, Alta (Colborne) McEwen; Alta had an ear to the rail line to hear the rail sounds. With all the shunting of the rail cars, she couldn't hear the shouts of warning of an oncoming car. It was Dave that was able to pull her out on time. Alta went on to describe Dave as "a big good looking guy ... a great gambler at the hotel in Brigden, with his brother Harry." From another family line, Dave would board a train to Michigan and visit Clayton Parr and family. A young Clinton usually received from Dave a 25 cent skinplaster, and a much older Clinton wished he still had them. |
| I haven't yet confirmed that he was married. A Mildred Butcher has been
mentioned as his wife, though other sources have mentioned that he never married and that
he never had children. David died from ___________ (cause) on 10 December 1934 at Petrolia Hospital and was buried at the Bear Creek Cemetery, north of Brigden, Ontario. |
